Recording a song in GarageBand iOS.

So, you know that thing where you have an entire month to write and record a song, and it’s one day before the end of the month and you’re halfway through? Yeah, that.

In this video, I give myself a two hour recording session in the hope that I can get most of my new song recorded and somewhat mixed. What is the end result? Let’s take a look…

How to set microphone volume in GarageBand iOS (input gain)

How to set microphone input gain for vocals (volume).

There are some quite simple techniques for getting a good vocal recording, many of which I cover in another video here – https://youtu.be/TL-Fzo4Q7Ag

One of the things I see folks get wrong is setting their input gain for their microphone either too high or too low. There are issues caused by both high gain, such as clipping and distortion, as well as low gain, such as tracks that need to be turned up too much.

The sweet spot is different for different vocalists, microphones and sound sources, but as a general rule, you want your input to be hitting between 50% and 70% on your input meter, meaning you are getting a strong signal, but are not at risk of clipping or distorting.

Share, copy or backup iPhone/iPad files using Zip/Unzip

How to Zip and Unzip files on iPhone/iPad to share, copy or backup.

Sharing, copying or backing up your files in iOS can be challenging, especially things like GarageBand .band project files, as these are often not compatible with file systems outside of iOS and iCloud.

If you want to quickly and easily share and backup your iOS files, then using the Shortcuts app to help you create .zip archive files can be a really useful process.

In this video, I show you how to create “Zip” and “Unzip” shortcuts using the Shortcuts app in iOS 11 or iOS 12, and then zip up your iOS files in to a single .zip archive file ready to be copied or shared using any cloud storage platform like Dropbox, Google Drive or One Drive, as well as directly to your Mac or PC using iTunes File Sharing.

JBL Endurance Run headphones – 2 month update

Pick up a pair of JBL Endurance Run headphones here – https://amzn.to/2CdHFtV

JBL Endurance Run headphones – after 2 months of use.

In my ongoing quest to find affordable, quality earbuds, in this video I am revisiting the JBL Endurance Run headphones which I originally unboxed and reviewed over 2 months ago.

Do I still recommend them? Well, in a word – yes!

For a US$20 pair of earbuds, the quality of the sound, the built-in microphone and the features are really second to none.

In terms of the “cons”, they are very few. There has been some wear on the plastic around the connector, and some splitting in the silicon earbuds, but that’s about it.

Take a look at the original videos in the links below, and for more audio goodness, head on over to http://studiolivetoday.com.

Why natural talent is overrated in music

Why natural ability is over-rated in music.

When it comes to creating, recording and releasing your best music, what role does talent and natural ability play.

If you ARE naturally talented, then you have a small early advantage, but for those who are grinding it out, the good news is that this advantage is not as big as you might think!

In this video, I talk about why perseverance and attitude is more important that talent and that everyone can release their own music.

How to merge tracks in GarageBand iOS – 6 cool tips

The merge function in GarageBand iOS can be used not just to merge one or more tracks together, there are a number of very cool tricks and hacks that you can do with “merge”.

Merging is different from the “join” function, which only works with MIDI tracks and will combine the actual MIDI data from multiple tracks in to one track. If you are looking for a video about joining MIDI tracks, check this one out – https://youtu.be/aNAylRfHy5s

Description:

1. Merge function overview – how to use merge and tips for effective use
a. Merge will “write” all effects and plug-ins to the track, including the panning
b. Merge will make MIDI tracks unable to be edited
2. Merge two tracks together in to one audio recorder track
3. Merge a dry track (without including the effects)
4. Merge a MIDI track to convert to an audio recorder track
5. Normalize (normalise) the volume of a quiet audio track
6. Merge an audio unit or inter-app audio track
7. Add FX to just one track
8. Merge to set up for exporting “stems” of your song

Should you change your DAW? (Digital Audio Workstation)

Should you change or upgrade your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)?

Well in this video, I give you my three best reasons why you SHOULD change, as well as three reasons why you should NOT.

Why you should change to a different DAW:
1. Your current DAW does not have a feature that will help you make better music
2. You are collaborating with people, or working in a studio, which uses a specific DAW
3. Your workflow would suit a particular type of DAW, such as one that support loops and samples over analog recordings

Why you should NOT change to a different DAW:
1. You want to create “better” music and think a new DAW will make your recordings sound better
2. You want to be a “professional” and have heard that pros only use ProTools (or another DAW)
3. Someone has told your that one DAW is “better” than another

How to use vocal effects in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use vocal effects in GarageBand iPhone and GarageBand iPad.

Recording vocals in GarageBand iOS using the audio recorder is quite simple, but the number of different options and presets can be a little overwhelming.

So in this video, I am taking a look at all of the vocal presets available in the audio recorder in GarageBand iOS, and letting you know what’s included in each one, and how to get the best sounds for your vocal recordings.

I also include some tips on tracking (recording) vocals, and which preset I use when I’m recording a vocal in GarageBand iOS.

You will also see (and hear) me record the chorus for my new song in GarageBand and use this to showcase all of the different vocal presets, plug-ins and effects here in GarageBand iOS.

Can you use a guitar as a bass guitar in GarageBand iOS?

Can you use a guitar as a bass guitar in GarageBand iOS?

Something a little different and (hopefully) fun today. My man Seth over on the GarageBand Users Facebook group mentioned using the vocal transformer plug-in in GarageBand to pitch down your guitar one octave to make it sound more like a bass guitar.

This sounded too cool not to try!

So in this video, I test out this method and add a bass guitar track to my GarageBand iPhone project using just my electric (6 string) guitar, the virtual bass amp sims in GarageBand, and the vocal transformer plug-in.

How will it turn out? Well, you’ll have to watch the video to find out!

For more tips, tricks and tutorials, head over to http://studiolivetoday.com.

(Oh, and the mystery track I reference in the video is “Horror Movie” by the legendary Australian band “Skyhooks”.

Recording drums, bass and guitar guide tracks in GarageBand iOS

Record drums, bass and guitar guide tracks in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

With my chord progressions and song structure in place, it’s time to lay down some guide tracks in GarageBand on my iPhone, so in this video, I show how to quickly create some basic drums using “Drummer” and a bass line using the “autoplay” feature of the smart bass. I then grab the acoustic guitar and record a guide track so that I’m now ready to start working on the arrangement, vocals and additional instruments.

Included in the video is a heap of tips and tricks that can help speed up your GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad workflow, and make recording your songs quick, simple and effective.
