Can you use an iRig to connect a microphone?

Can you use an iRig to connect a microphone? Not really.

In this video, I answer a question I get a lot – can I connect a dynamic microphone to an iRig or guitar interface to record on my iPhone or iPad.

The short answer to this is “no”, but it is technically possible, so in this video I show what happens when you do this, and why it is not a good idea.

Here’s the deal – microphones need a preamp to get enough gain (volume) for a decent signal and a good quality recording. When you plug a microphone in to a standard instrument jack, the volume level is so low that in order to hear the recording, you need to turn the volume up, which introduces significant noise in to the recording.

How to start a new song in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

If you are a beginner when it comes to GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad, or just want to see the process I use to set up a new track, then this video is for you.

In this video, I show how to set up a new project in GarageBand, including setting the time signature, key signature, tempo and metronome, and then record some live guitar, drums, piano and bass to show how I start building a new song in GarageBand iOS.

Here’s what is covered:
1. Setting up the project – key signature, time signature, tempo
2. Recording a Drummer track – replacing the metronome with a drum track
3. Recording guitar – using the iPad mic to record an acoustic guitar part
4. Recording piano – using the virtual touch instrument to record a piano part
5. Recording bass – using the smart bass instrument to record a bass line

Lightning to HDMI adapter (Apple Lightning to Digital AV)

Lightning to HDMI adapter (Apple Lightning to Digital AV)

If you are looking to output from your iPhone or iPad to a TV or monitor via HDMI, then you will need the Apple Lightning to Digital AV cable.

This Lightning to HDMI adapter features a lightning connector and lightning port, so you can keep your iPhone or iPad charged, as well as an HDMI port which allows you to output your video from the iPad or iPhone to a TV or monitor with HDMI.

Things to keep in mind:
1. Each iOS device will output at a different native resolution and aspect ratio, so you won’t always get complete full screen
2. The lightning port can only be used for charging, not for connecting other USB devies
3. There is a small delay between the iPad/iPhone screen and the TV/monitor

Are phone-free zones for live concerts a good idea?

Are “phone-free” zones for live concerts a good idea?

In this video, I take you along as I experience my first “phone-free” live performance using the “Yondr” service (http://overyondr.com).

Will the experience be as bad as I first thought going in? Will it create the engaged and distraction free environment that (apparently) many people are hoping for?

Or is it a step backwards and a solution to a problem that simply doesn’t exist?

Take a look at our experience and then let me know – would you attend a live performance where you need to give up your smartphone?

How to fix headphone jacks and charging ports… with a toothpick?

Note: This method works for some issues but will not solve or fix all headphone or charger port issues. Use at your own risk and consult a professional if you are concerned about your phone or tablet.

How to fix headphone jack or charging ports… with a toothpick?

Do you have a headphone jack that is not working? Is your charging port not… charging any more? In this video, I show you an easy technique which can fix some common problems with connecting your headphones and data or charging cables.

The method is simple – to remove the lint, dust, dirt and other “crud”, simply gently (very gently!) scrape the inside of the port with a toothpick. This will remove the bits of lint and other objects which are in your port and could be causing issues with the connection and make your headphones and charging ports not work.

This is not a guaranteed solution, but I have found it works a significant amount of time and at worst you have clean ports and can remove this as a potential cause of any issues.
