How to normalize volume in GarageBand iOS (iPad/iPhone)

How to normalize volume in GarageBand on the iPad or iPhone to increase audio volume levels and help boost quiet audio.

In this video I show how to use the “merge” function in GarageBand iOS to normalize audio tracks, which can help when you have recorded audio at a low level and can’t clearly see the waveforms. This also allows you to lower the volume on your faders and use less compression to get the mix balanced.

The steps for this process are simple:
1. Create a “clean” audio recorder track
2. Copy you existing audio to the clean track
3. Use the merge function to normalize the audio levels
4. Changes the preset or add effects back in manually

How to edit MIDI tracks in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to edit MIDI tracks in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

I recorded the MIDI track using a Lightning to USB Adapter and my MIDI keyboard – here are links to the gear I used:
Apple Lightning to USB Adapter (Model No. MD821AM/A) – https://amzn.to/2wg871F
Apple Lightning to USB 3 Adapter (Model No. MD0W2AM/A) – https://amzn.to/2wnyqmL
M-Audio Keystation 49 II – https://amzn.to/2vN5B3E

GarageBand on iPhone or iPad gives you the ability to record up to 32 tracks of audio, including hundreds of virtual instruments. Editing the MIDI information created in your virtual tracks can be challenging however, so here’s a practical guide to editing your MIDI tracks to make them sound polished and professional.

In this video, I show you how to quantize, edit velocity of notes, move notes, delete and add notes and correct the timing of your MIDI notes.

For more on editing MIDI in GarageBand iOS, or creating in GarageBand in general, check out the related videos below.

What is panning in music and audio recording?

What is panning in music and audio recording and production, and how can you use it to add variety and interest to your songs?

In this video, we explain what panning is all about. Panning is the balancing of stereo audio between the left and right channels, creating a spread of sound from left to right. We cover what sounds and instruments usually sit in each part of the stereo spectrum and some of the general “rules” of panning.

How to sing and record better vocals in the home studio

How to sing and record better vocals in the home studio.

In this video I give you my two biggest tips for recording and mixing great sounding vocals in the home studio, and you don’t need to be an expert or have expensive gear to do it.

1. Sing like nobody’s listening

When you’re just starting to record your vocals, the tendency is to sing within yourself, which can result in a vocal performance that lacks energy and passion . Simply increasing your energy levels and giving a 100% passionate performance can make all the difference and give your vocals new life.

2. Mix your vocals at a higher volume

When you’re starting out, you may lack confidence and therefore mix your vocals at a lower level, meaning they don’t sit nicely in the mix. Using a combination of volume, compression, EQ and volume automation, you can get your vocals to the right level make them sit nicely in the mix.

How to zip and unzip files in iOS (iPhone/iPad)

In this video, I show you how to create a “zip” or other archive of your files on you iPhone or iPad and then how to unzip these using the very cool “Worklow” app in iOS.

Workflow allows you to create custom actions of all kinds, including the ability to zip and unzip files which is what I show in this video.

The process is quite simple but there are a few steps:
1. Create a new workflow action for zipping files
2. Add the “Make Archive” action
3. Add the “Quick Look” action
4. Add the “Save File” action
5. Name the action and choose an icon
6. Create a new action for unzipping files
7. Follow the steps above but choose the “Extract Archive” action
8. Go to the “Files” app in iOS
9. Select the file of files you want to zip
10. Choose the “Run Workflow” action
11. Zip your file(s)!
12. Choose and archive file
13. Unzip you file(s)!

If you have other cool uses for the Workflow app, share them with the community in the comments.
