What is the difference between audio compression and file compression?

What is the difference between audio compression and file compression?

If you are new to music, or have just always been confused about exactly what audio compression is, then this video is for you.

In this video, I break down the difference between audio compression and file compression and explain how both of these work.

Audio compressors work by reducing the peaks in and audio signal to create a more even performance, and then bringing the volume back up using make-up gain to return the track to a decent volume level.

File compression is the process of compressing the contents of a file to make the file size smaller. For audio files, this means creating MP3 or M4A files by removing sound from frequencies that cannot be heard by most listeners, resulting in a smaller file size. When mastering or releasing music, you always want to ensure you are using full resolution “lossless” files which do not have any compression.

Fear Cut – Goats (Lyric Video)

“Fear Cut” is the latest punk band out of… um… some Scandinavian country? They have the best punk bands up there yeah?

Okay, so it’s really me. But this is part of an experiment where I am releasing a single using the free “Amuse” distribution service, which allows you to release your music to Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play and a bunch of others for free! That’s zero dollars, zero pounds and even zero krona! (Scandinavia call back).

“Fear Cut” is the name voted on by viewers (okay, it came second – long story – you can fin out here – https://youtu.be/_Y2zzUz4ghs

How to use audio units in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use audio units in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

If you are looking to add more plugins and effects to GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad, using audio unit extension plugins is a great option.

Audio Unit extensions, often called AU or AUv3 plugins, are apps that you download from the App Store and install on your iPhone or iPad, and can then add as effects in your GarageBand iOS projects.

This gives you the ability to add new and different effects on top of the stock GarageBand plugins which Apple already provides.

Check out the related videos below for more information about using AU plugins and others effects in GarageBand iOS, and for more audio goodness, head on over to http://studiolivetoday.com.

Free EQ plugin for iOS (iPhone/iPad) – LRC5

Free EQ plugin for iOS (iPhone/iPad) – LRC5

Download the plugin on the app store here – https://itunes.apple.com/app/lrc5/id1418930761

The visual EQ in GarageBand iOS is very cool. It lets you adjust three bands (frequencies) in the bass, mid and treble range, and allows you to adjust the overall volume as well.

But what if there was a free alternative to the visual EQ which has 5 bands, adjustable Q (how wide or narrow the EQ adjustment is), as well as multiple EQ shapes including high pass and high shelf? You would probably want to know about it.

So in this video, I take the LCR5 plugin for a spin. LCR5 is an audio unit plugins (AUv3) for iOS (iPhone or iPad) that can be used with any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) including GarageBand. It functions really well, though I have had some issues with stability at times, and like all additional plugins, it will use more processing power on your device, so go easy with it on older iPhones and iPads.

Overall, it is a good option to have if you need to make some more surgical and detailed EQ adjustments on your tracks.
