Automation is a great tool to help mix your vocals and other tracks in GarageBand iPad and GarageBand iPhone, and in this video, I’m going to show you how to do it.
To enable automation, just tap right on the track icon and selection “automation”. Then enable write mode by sliding the lock icon in the top left, and tap on the volume line to add automation points. Now simply drag the points up, down, left or right to create automation moves for your volume and create a nice, balanced sound.

“By Your Side” is a song from the EP “Family” by Pete Johns, released in 2016.
The Family EP included four tracks written for the four members of my family. (Okay the one for me was about all of us. Writing a song about myself seemed weird)
== Lyrics ==
When it’s raining outside,
And the darkness is all around,
And you don’t know where to hide,
And you’ve got something on your mind.
Doesn’t matter what you say, and doesn’t,
Matter what you do,
You know that you will be in my heart and I,
Mean it triple true.
I know it hurts sometimes but it’s worth it in the end
I know that sometimes you feel sad, but that’s what I’m here for
I will be right by your side
Doesn’t matter what you do or say or be
And I don’t even know sometimes you see
I will be right by your side
No need to fear the darkness anymore, ’cause I’ll b e there
Just to lend a hand when things don’t work out right
When the sun starts to shine,
And I rise for another day,
You will say morning time,
And I know things will be just fine,
Doesn’t matter how you feel, and doesn’t,
Matter who you are,
You know that you will be in my heart and I,
Know you’re going far
And when the tears are gone and I see you smile again
I know that it’s just part of growing, and that’s what I’m here for
I will be right by your side
Doesn’t matter what you do or say or be
And I don’t even know sometimes you see
I will be right by your side
No need to fear the darkness anymore, ’cause I’ll be there
Just to lend a hand and make things work out right
Out right, out right, out right

The song was actually the second I wrote for this project, which was partly a birthday present for me wife. I originally wrote a song called “Three” all about my then cheeky three year old who always wanted three of everything because “I’m three”.
This one came about because Jasmine has inherited my sometimes useful but always draining habit of over-thinking. I wanted to tell her that I know what it feels like to grow up and go through changes, but that I will always be… you guessed it… right by her side.
The song itself was written in a very simple format with verse, pre-chorus and chorus repeated and I’m in that most simple of keys – C major! I did use the variation of the D minor in the chorus, which I think is a little bit of a surprise and adds to the song.
Arrangement wise it is a simple acoustic guitar, vocals and virtual drums. I recorded it in Reaper on my PC back before I learned the joys of mobile recording, and had quite limited gear at the time, and was yet to acquire my now fave Taylor guitar.
What I learned from this one is the importance of getting a good guitar tone. The tone in this was okay, but you can hear that the strings aren’t fresh and the mic is too close which is generating extra squeaking.
