In this video, I discuss what features are, and are not, supported in GarageBand iOS on the iPhone and iPad.

MIDI keyboards have a heap of different features these days, so it is important to understand which will be compatible with GarageBand iPhone and GarageBand iPad before you make a purchase.

The key MIDI keyboard features which are supported in GarageBand iOS are:
1. Pitch (MIDI note)
2. Velocity (how hard the note is hit)
3. Pitch bend wheel (for bending pitch in some instruments)
4. Modulation wheel (for modulation effects in some instruments)
5. Sustain (when using a sustain pedal)

Features which are not supported (or 100% supported) in GarageBand iOS are:
1. Sliders (volume and other adjustments)
2. Knobs (for adjusting synths and other sounds)
3. Drum pads (will work, but not assignable or programmable)
4. Other custom buttons (as GarageBand does not allow any programming of functions)

If you are looking to connect USB MIDI keyboards, audio interfaces and other USB devices to your iPhone or iPad, a powered USB hub is something that you should consider adding to your gear.

Powered USB hubs use mains (A/C) power to run your USB gear, while connecting it to your iPhone or iPad using a Lightning to USB adapter. Just connect your powered USB hub to your iPad or iPhone, connect up your USB devices and you will be able to send data and power to keep everything working.

How to improve GarageBand performance in iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to improve GarageBand performance in iOS (iPhone/iPad)

In this video, I give you my top 7 tips for getting better performance in GarageBand on your iPhone of iPad.

GarageBand is a free DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for the iPhone and iPad, and as it is a very powerful app, it can use up some resources on your iOS device, so these tips are things you can do for free to improve the performance of this great app.

1. Free up space on your device to make sure you have enough storage space available
2. Ensure you have the latest version of iOS and GarageBand installed
3. Turn your iPhone or iPad off and back on
4. Close any other apps running in the background
5. Copy your project file to the device storage instead of iCloud
6. Merge more complex tracks to an audio recorder track to save on processing
7. Reset GarageBand

Bonus tips to free up space:
1. Delete photos (and recently deleted photos)
2. Delete files (and recently deleted files)
3. Remove or uninstall/reinstall apps

Audio Unit Extensions – Errors when exporting with AU plugins

How to manage Audio Unit plugin errors, and share your projects with others who don’t have the same AUv3 plugins.

There’s no doubt that Audio Unit plugins are cool, but with so many different plugins available, they are not always super stable. If you are having errors when trying to export your songs with AU plugins, this workaround could be just what you need.

In this video, I show how to use the “merge” function to convert an Audio Unit track to a regular audio track. This helps ensure the export will be successful, and also means you can now share that project with another user who doesn’t have the AU plugin.
