How to use the LOW SHELF filter in GarageBand iOS

What is a low shelf filter and how do you use a low shelf filter in GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad?

A low shelf filter allows you to add an EQ “shelf” at a certain frequency which can help you boost, or cut, below a certain frequency in the low bass end of your sound, which can help either enhance or reduce the bass in your track, creating space in your mix.

In this video, I show you how to add the free low shelf filter in GarageBand iOS and show an example of how to use it on bass, drums and keyboard instruments.

Pete Johns – Three (2015)

β€œThree” is a song from the EP β€œFamily” by Pete Johns, released in 2016.

The Family EP included four tracks written for the four members of my family. This one was for my daughter, who was then 3, and now 8. It’s all about the rational irrationality of three years olds.
== Lyrics ==

I know you’re tired, well so am I
Feels like the week has passed us by
Started at six and now it’s Eight
How did I let it get so Late
I know there’s things that you don’t know
Like when I leave and you can’t go
Please understand me when I say
That’s you’ll appreciate one day
And there’s one thing you always say
That brings a smile and makes my day

Three because you’re three
You want three because you’re three
Three because you’re three
You want three because you’re three

And when it’s time, to go to bed
Sometimes you see things in your head
The fishies swim, and make you sad
But These are dreams that we’ve all had
When morning comes, you’re still awake
These are the choices that we make
You’ll always be, my number one
For you I’ll stay until the sun
And there’s one thing you always say
That brings a smile and makes my day

Three because you’re three
You want three because you’re three
Three because you’re three
You want three because you’re three

And when I think about the reasons, I find it so unreal
That you’ve been her for so few seasons, and each one has been great
And when you hold your arms out to me, my fears just melt away
Like iceblocks on your plate

== Behind the song ==

This song was written and recorded back in 2014/2015 as part of a collection of songs I wrote for my wife’s birthday, which eventually became the EP “Family” released in 2016.

The song is built around the basic piano riff which repeats throughout the song. I wrote the original riff in GarageBand on my iPhone and in fact it was one of the first song ideas I ever created using GarageBand. I must find the original project one day!

I added in the simple guitar and drums and then added the vocal melody over the top. There are hints of what my music would evolve to, with the piano and guitars driving the sound, but it is certainly quite a stripped down arrangement. The vocals? Let’s just say I have found the keys that work for my vocal range and improved my performances over the past few years…

The content of the song is pretty self-explanatory – three years olds are weird! My particular three year old wanted three of everything “because I’m three”, so that became a catchphrase around our house. The verses actually tell the story of my experience helping her through those tough toddler years to become the kid she is today. Though she still does occasionally have nightmares about fishies that keep her awake at night!

Thanks for listening!
