The benefit of having a dedicated Facebook music page is that you can share all your music related posts and videos in one place, and not annoy your friends who may no want to see every single song and piece of music you share. Pete Johns – For the Birds

Pete Johns – For the Birds

“For the Birds” is the first track on my 2018 album “Self(ish) Aware”.

The song was written, recorded and mixed in GarageBand iOS and featured in my “Complete-a-song” series in March 2018 which you can check out here – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc8Xg_23Wa55JWA4w3HJRwkH0mPhXRzSd
== Lyrics ==

Every time I think about the things you say are true
It gets me thinkin’ bout the different ways we choose to spend our time
And I know that there are differing priorities
But it seems that yours are stuck in 1982

And all the pain
You worry ‘bout today
Just leave behind
Just listen up and say

It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds

One thing you always say is look out for yourself
Nobody else is gonna keep you safe and make you satisfied
And that’s something that I just can’t come to terms with
So you can keep yourself protected from society

And all the friends
You dump along the way
Will all move on
Without you and they’ll say

It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds
It’s for the birds

And if you open up your eyes
And look around you’ll start to find
That you gave up the daily grind
For something worse

Pretending that you are much better than the other people
(It’s for the birds)
Finding faults in things that don’t align with what you wanna hear
(It’s for the birds)
Believing everything that you were told when you were growing up
(It’s for the birds)
After all your happiness is all that matters in the end
(It’s for the birds)
Rejecting others for the way that they decide to live their life
(It’s for the birds)
Denying every single fact you know that deep down is the truth
(It’s for the birds)
Intimidated, sad and scared is the reason for your pain
(It’s for the birds)
So now it’s time to start again
It’s for the birds
== Behind the song ==

This song was written, recorded, mixed, mastered and released as part of a month long songwriting series in March 2018.

You can check out the playlist with all 17 episodes here:

Or catch just the highlights here:

The lyrics of this song tell the story of a character who is both stuck in the past, and way too focused on themselves. It’s a bit of a trend in my songwriting to be honest. I think because I am quite introverted and very much non-confrontational, I tend to get my frustration at specific types of people out through my songs.

The message of the song is that so many things we worry about and stress about don’t really matter. They are, as the saying says “for the birds” – meaning just let them go and stop trying to be who other people want you to be. The final chorus is the final piece of advice where I reveal why the character is acting this way; because they are “intimidated, sad and scared”. And now it’s time to start again and stop worrying because… it’s for the birds!

The instrumentation is covered in detail in the series, so I won’t go in to much detail here, except to say that the original version had a big band opening which was recorded live when I walked past a band rehearsing, but was removed for the final version. If you want to hear the original version with the band intro, check it out here – https://youtu.be/GwlByhAvRfM
