How to master in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to master in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

In this video, it is time to master my new song and by popular demand I will be doing this 100% in GarageBand iOS with just free stock plugins.

GarageBand iPhone (or GarageBand iPad) is far from the ideal platform for mastering a song, but it can be done.

This simple approach involves using the free LRC5 EQ plugin, the stock GarageBand compressor and the Apple AU limiter to make some subtle final tweaks to my song to make it more competitive and “radio ready”.

Steps involved in this process:
1. Export the final mix of the song as a WAV file
2. (If your track is too loud – getting close to peaking – use the EQ FX hack to lower the overall volume)
3. Set up a new blank project and make sure the number of bars is set to “automatic”
4. Import this WAV file back in to a new GarageBand project
5. Trim the start and finish of the track to ensure the lead-in and lead-out sound right
6. Remove any plugins or settings to ensure it is completely raw audio
7. Add the AU limiter plugin to the end of the effects chain
8. Add the stock GarageBand compressor plugin
9. Add the LRC5 EQ plugin
10. Adjust the settings to get the right balanced final master

How to use MIDI loops in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use MIDI loops in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

In this video, I show how to use the very cool MIDI loops in GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad to add even more variety to your songs.

Conventional Apple Loops use wave files and therefore can’t be edited, however MIDI loops include actual MIDI note data and therefore can be changed and edited much more easily.

How to use EQ in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use EQ in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

In this video, I show how to use the Visual EQ to adjust the volume of different frequencies (equalization) in your GarageBand iPhone and GarageBand iPad tracks.

Visual EQ allows you to use a parametric EQ to adjust the volume of your tracks at different frequencies, allowing you to adjust the bass, mid and treble frequencies independently.

In this video, I demonstrate how to use EQ on an acoustic guitar track, using common methods such as boosting and sweeping, cutting troublesome frequency ranges, using high pass and low pass filtering techniques and how to use the analyzer to visualize the frequency and assist in the EQ process.

Also included is a bonus tip where I show how to use the free LRC5 EQ plugin, which has 5 bands and Q control, enabling you to control how wider or narrow your EQ cuts and boosts are.

What is the difference between velocity and volume in GarageBand iOS?

What is the difference between velocity and volume in GarageBand iOS?

Ever wondered why there is both velocity and volume on your MIDI and virtual instrument tracks in GarageBand iOS? Velocity and volume are similar but can be quite different.

Velocity is a MIDI attribute which measures how hard a note or sound is hit. This varies from pure volume, which is simply how loud the sound is played back.

For example, you can have a high velocity sound, but still turn the volume down to very low, and likewise, you can take a low velocity sound and turn up the volume. Velocity changes the actual sound for many instruments, especially drum sounds, as it varies how hard they are hit.
