Are you good enough?

Is that even the right question to ask?

In this video I break down why this is such a common question asked by music creators, and try to help you understand how to rephrase this question in to something productive.

The key things to remember about being “good enough”
1. “Good” is 100% subjective. What is good to you may be bad to someone else and vice versa!
2. You can’t determine if you are “good enough” if you haven’t defined what you are trying to actually achieve
3. Other people will give you feedback based on what THEY are trying to achieve, not what your are
4. If you are asking this question, you are showing humility and a willingness to be learn, develop and grow – these are good things!

Viewer Mix Review in GarageBand iOS – “V3N3Y – Only Insane”

In this video, I take a look at a song recorded and mixed by one of my viewers here on Studio Live Today, created 100% in GarageBand iOS.

Jump to 15:19 to listen to the whole track – “V3N3Y – Only Insane”

One of the best ways to learn is to see how other people create music, so was a great experience for me, and I wanted to share it with everyone else.

Pete Johns – Sin

“Sin” is a track by Pete Johns from the 2018 album “Self(ish) Aware.

The song was originally written right here on Studio Live Today as a songwriting series. You can check out the series of videos here:

== Lyrics ==

They say, you better toughen up or this here town will eat you alive
They say, protect yourself at every turn and never let the others see you cry
They say, if you wanna fit in here you better learn to follow not to stand
And they say, it’s time to be a man and don’t you ever try to get a helping hand

I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a problem anymore
It’s just the way I feel within
And it’s a thing that now I know I can’t ignore

I try, to fit in with the other guys and shoot the breeze to show en I’m on board
I try , to realise the truth is that it’s time to jump , forget about the cord
I try, to justify the bad behaviour , just take a joke is what they say
I try, to tell myself it’s just the way it’s been since back in the day

I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a problem anymore
It’s just the way I feel within
And it’s a thing that now I know I can’t ignore

And now it’s time to move on
I sit and try to respond
But they are laughing at me

I didn’t know it was a sin to be my own man
I didn’t know it was my job to make you understand
All the times that I went along with what you say
Even though I knew there must be another way

Now it’s time that I made a new commitment
So sick of putting up with this resentment
Tried hard but I never even made a dent
In the prejudice, the bigotry, the sentiment

Man up, are you saying I’m the weak one?
You’re the one who needs to take a look at what you’ve done
I feel things and pretty sure you feel ’em to
Ya just stuck in this cycle that they handed you

Moving on and I wish em well, maybe
Moving on and and they’re never gonna shame me
No judgment from the ones I hold close
No judgment from the ones that mean the most

I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a problem any more
It’s just the way I feel within
And now it’s rocking me to my core

I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a problem any more
It’s just the way I feel within
And now I’m pointing you to the door

I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a sin
I didn’t know it was a sin
== Behind the song ==

This song was written as part of a “Song in a Week” challenge here on the channel and is built around the acoustic guitar riff you hear throughout the song. As the song developed, it took on a heavier feel, borrowing strongly from the alt rock and grunge songs I loved back in the 90s. I’ve always enjoyed the “mellow verse, heavy chorus” structure with distorted guitars kicking in and driving the song forward.

When it came to writing a bridge, I put it out to viewers here on the channel and one such viewer suggested that I include a rap break as the bridge. Others agreed and wanted to hear me rap, and the rest is history!

The lyrics of the song tells an all too familiar story of not fitting in with what is considered “normal”. It’s a story of trying to fit in with the crowd, and is somewhat autobiographical, reflecting on times where I just “went along with the crowd”, even though I knew what “the crowd” were doing and saying was NOT cool. It took me a long time to realise that it’s 100% okay to not “fit in”, and having the courage to be your own person may be difficult, but is the only way to be true to yourself.

There is a very “blokey” culture here in Australia, where things like casual bigotry and sexism is accepted. I know we are not alone in this in the world too. (“Locker room talk” anyone?) The message of this song is that not only is it not cool to just go along with this, but if more people had the courage to stand up and say “nope, not good enough”, I think we could make a positive difference.

How to view other tracks while recording in GarageBand iOS

When recording an individual track in GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad, the default view shows just the microphone or amp.

If you have an audio interface with 2 or more channels however, you can record to two tracks at once and instead view the “tracks” view when recording.
