🎼 Lyrics:
Oh the bars and the pubs used to thrill me
With a couple of pints I was happy to stay
But the truth is there’s nothing that I’d rather do
Than to spend some time drinking with you

Some people live for adventure
Some people need the bright flashing of lights
But I’d rather curly up on a warm summer’s night
And spend some time drinking with you

Back in the day I was eager to stray
Far away I liked to roam
But now I will be where the beer and win’s free
Here in the comfort of home

So the others may want to be different
And choose not to listen to all that I say
While they’re lining up just to get in to the bar
I’ll be sitting here drinking with you

Yodel-ay-ho, where should we go?
Somewhere they turn all the lights way down low
Yodel-ay-ho, where should we go?
I’d rather just call it a night and go home

So the young ones might call me a killjoy
As they wave goodbye saying you only live one
But while they’re drinking whiskey for twelve bucks a glass
@I’ll be sitting here drinking with you
I’ll be sitting here drinking with you
So let’s just settle in for a few
‘Cause I’m sitting here drinking with you

πŸ’¬ Behind the song:
“Drinking With You” was written as the first song I ever contributed to the “Song Spark Collective”, a Facebook group for songwriters, in December 2017. The song was written in about 2 weeks and developed around the hook “sitting here drinking with you”.

The lyrics tell the story of what happens over time to our desire to be “out drinking” and my personal preference to be with the people closest to me instead of out and about in public. It is a tongue in cheek view of how we “old” folk think about those who are, in reality, doing exactly what we did 20 years ago. I wanted to share a genuine story, while at the same time poking a little fun at how quickly we forget about the past and criticise those who are doing exactly what we did.

The structure of the song is a little different that the standard “verse, chorus, verse” and instead uses the “yodeling” sing-a-long chorus, and a bridge where a chorus may be. The arrangement is clearly inspired by Irish music and is intended to be a “drinking song”, but in name and in nature. It remains one of my favourite songs to play live and translates well to a single acoustic guitar and voice.
