How to use “pitch” mode for keyboards in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use “pitch” mode for keyboards in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

If you use the touch keyboard to create music in GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad, you are probably familiar with the “glissando” and “scroll” modes, but some of the synth instruments also have a third option, the “pitch” mode, which is what we will explore in this video.

In this video, I show how to use the “pitch” mode on a keyboard in GarageBand iOS to play a part where the lead instruments slides between different pitches, creating a cool and unique effect.

Artiphon Instrument 1 – the most unique MIDI controller ever?

In this video, I give a quick demo of the Artiphon Instrument 1, one of the most interesting and unique MIDI controllers I have ever owned. Okay, it is by far the most unique (and coolest) controller I’ve ever even used!

The Artiphon Instrument 1 was born from a Kickstarter crowd funding drive and is now available to purchase, which is what my pretty awesome wife did for my 40th birthday. Getting it to Australia was a little challenging, and perhaps I’ll cover that in a future video?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this demo… and of course I have to put it through its paces with GarageBand on my iPad too!

How to reduce latency (delay) when recording vocals in GarageBand iOS

How to reduce latency (delay) when recording vocals in GarageBand iOS

In this video, I explain why there is latency (lag/delay) when recording vocals in GarageBand iPhone, GarageBand iPad and other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations)

Latency is caused by the processing required by the software (your DAW) and creates a small delay between when you sing and when your voice is heard back in your headphones. This latency can be very distracting and result in poor performances on your vocals.

There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of latency, specifically:
1. Remove or reduce the number of plugins being used when recordings, especially the “enhance tuning” in GarageBand which add a significant delay
2. Turn off software monitoring completely (you won’t hear your voice in your headphones but will still hear other tracks
3. Use an interface that provide a “direct monitor” or “zero latency monitoring” option, such as the Steinberg UR12 or Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

What is the difference between XLR vs USB microphones?

What is the difference between XLR vs USB microphones – and which should you use?

In this video, I take a look at the key differences between using an XLR microphone and a USB microphone in your mobile or home studio.

USB microphones have come a long way and now offer sound quality which is comparable to a good quality condenser microphone and an audio interface.

XLR microphones allow you to easily change and upgrade components of your studio setup and give you much more flexibility, but the cost and complexity can be much greater.

Which should you choose?

GarageBand Alchemy Synth “preview” on an iPad Air 1 and iPhone 5S

Alchemy Synth “preview” on an iPad Air 1 and iPhone 5S (GarageBand iOS)

The very cool Achemy Synth is only available on some models of iPad and iPhone, iPad Air 2 and above, iPhone 6 and above and the iPad Mini 4.

However, when Apple released some recent MIDI loops, they included some that used virtual instruments from the Alchemy Synth, meaning that when you use these loops, they engage the Alchemy Synth which is somewhere “under the hood”.

In this video, I test this out and show how we can get a “sneak peak” at the Alchemy Synth on an unsupported device here in GarageBand iPad or GarageBand iPhone.
