How to use audio units in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use audio units in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

If you are looking to add more plugins and effects to GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad, using audio unit extension plugins is a great option.

Audio Unit extensions, often called AU or AUv3 plugins, are apps that you download from the App Store and install on your iPhone or iPad, and can then add as effects in your GarageBand iOS projects.

This gives you the ability to add new and different effects on top of the stock GarageBand plugins which Apple already provides.

Free EQ plugin for iOS (iPhone/iPad) – LRC5

Free EQ plugin for iOS (iPhone/iPad) – LRC5

Download the plugin on the app store here – https://itunes.apple.com/app/lrc5/id1418930761

The visual EQ in GarageBand iOS is very cool. It lets you adjust three bands (frequencies) in the bass, mid and treble range, and allows you to adjust the overall volume as well.

But what if there was a free alternative to the visual EQ which has 5 bands, adjustable Q (how wide or narrow the EQ adjustment is), as well as multiple EQ shapes including high pass and high shelf? You would probably want to know about it.

So in this video, I take the LCR5 plugin for a spin. LCR5 is an audio unit plugins (AUv3) for iOS (iPhone or iPad) that can be used with any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) including GarageBand. It functions really well, though I have had some issues with stability at times, and like all additional plugins, it will use more processing power on your device, so go easy with it on older iPhones and iPads.

Overall, it is a good option to have if you need to make some more surgical and detailed EQ adjustments on your tracks.

What is the difference between INPUT and OUTPUT volume in GarageBand?

What is the difference between INPUT and OUTPUT volume in GarageBand iOS? (iPhone/iPad)

There are a number of places that you can adjust the gain (volume) in GarageBand iOS. So how do you know what volume you should set in each place? Well in this video I’m going to show you how to use the input, output and master volumes effectively in GarageBand iOS.

Here’s a quick overview:
1. Input gain – this is the volume of your microphone or input device and is important to set low enough to ensure you are not clipping
2. Output gain – this is the volume of the playback of each individual track, which doesn’t impact the input or clipping, but it still important to keep low
3. Master/playback volume – this is the volume of your iPad or iPhone, or the external headphone amp or interface that you are using to play back your track

Tom Hanks and the power of perseverance

Tom Hanks and the power of perseverance

Do you like Tom Hanks? Even if you don’t, you have to respect the long career and dozens of movies he has made over the years.

But you know what? Not every Tom Hanks movie is a hit. In fact, some of just downright awful. Have you SEEN Joe vs the Volcano?

So what does this have to do with music creation? Well, what Tom Hanks HAS done is persevered. When he made movies that were not good, he went back and made more. When his movies flopped and the box office, he learnt from it and made sure he picked a better movie next time.

How does this help you with your music creation?

It’s like this. Sometimes you will make music that SUCKS. I’ve made terrible music and some of your favourite artists have made terrible music. In fact, you simple MUST make terrible music if you want to make great music.

Why? Because terrible music helps us learn what does NOT work, which is just as important as what DOES work. If you don’t make bad music, you are probably not experimenting. You are probably not trying new things. And you are probably not prepared to fail.

And failure is super important when you are working towards your best music.

So keep making music. Keep experimenting. And eventually your “The Burbs” will eventually become your own “Saving Private Ryan”.
