How cover songs can help your songwriting

How cover songs can help your songwriting and original recordings.

In this video, I take a look at why cover songs are such a good way to improve your own original songwriting and recording processes.

Cover songs are often looked down on – after all why would you copy someone else’s song when you can write your own? But the truth is (in my view) that learning and playing covers of your favourite songs can really help you learn how great songs are put together.

Cover songs have three key positive factors:
1. It is fun to learn and play your favourite songs
2. Other people love hearing familiar songs (and you can show off your playing skills
3. You can learn a lot about chord progressions and song structures that can make your original songs even better!

Mastering in GarageBand on iPhone using the FAC Maxima Plug-in

Mastering in GarageBand on iPhone using the FAC Maxima Plug-in.

In this video, I attempt to master my song in GarageBand on my iPhone using just one plug-in – the FAC Maxima. The mastering process aims to make your song “radio ready” by making final tweaks such as EQ and limiting.

The FAC Maxima works as a sounds maximiser, which is like a compressor or limiter, meaning you can get some great volume boost without losing audio quality in your tracks.

Take a look at the process as I tweak the settings to master this track, or jump to the last 3 minutes if you want to check out the mastered version of the song.

How to use reference tracks when mixing music

How to use reference tracks when mixing music.

Reference tracks are a great way to make sure your music is “radio ready” and that you can get you mix sounding the best it can.

Using a reference track simply involves importing a track that has a similar sound to what you are going for, then soloing your song and this song separately to see how your track compares, so you can make changes.

How to use effects, plug-ins and EQ in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

How to use effects, plug-ins and EQ in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad)

There are 3 different ways to adjust effects and plug-ins in GarageBand iOS, and in this video I show you how to use all three.

Plug-ins and effects can be added and adjusted in three places – the instrument setting (for audio recorder tracks), the main mixing panel, and the detailed Plug-ins area.

Understanding how these three sections work together will help make your recording and mixing much easier and more effective.

How to mix drums in GarageBand iOS – Volume, Compression, EQ

How to mix drums in GarageBand iOS – Volume, Compression, EQ.

Drums can be one of the toughest instruments to mix in your tracks, and whether you’re using the GarageBand Drummer, Smart Drums, loops or actual recorded drums, there are a few things to consider in order to get your drums to sit nicely in the mix.

In this video, I take you through my basic tips for mixing drums in GarageBand iPad or GareageBand iPhone, including:
1. Velocity – how hard the Drummer is hitting the drums
2. Volume – ensuring volume is not peaking/clipping
3. Compression – how to set a compressor to make drums pop without pumping or distorting
4. EQ – using the visual EQ to adjust volume at different frequencies (bass, mid, treble)
