Apple Cancel the App Store Affiliate Program

In this video, I talk through the recent decision by Apple to cancel the affiliate program for apps and in-app purchases in the App Store.

Apple’s App Store was launched in July 2008 and over the last ten years has seen amazing growth in sales of apps and revenue generated for Apple and app creators.

The affiliate program was originally launched to help drive additional app sales, and offered those making referrals, such as app reviewers, a 7% commission for successful referrals. In recent times, this has been cut to just 2.5%, and now with the most recent announcement, the program will be cancelled entirely in October this year.

Should Apple be continuing to support the community of creators who have helped them drive so many app sales? Is this just a reality of the changing landscape and “big business”?

Chorus Effect in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad) – Quick Jam #39

In this quick tip tutorial video I show you how to use the chorus effect in GarageBand iOS on iPad and iPhone to spice up your guitars, bass and even vocals.

The chorus effect creates a “wavering” sound by adding a second tone almost identical to the original sound. You can use the settings of “mix”, “intensity” and “rate” to create a balanced and effective sound.

Covered in this video:
1. What is the chorus effect?
2. How and when would you use a chorus effect?
3. Adjusting the “mix” setting
4. Dialling in the “intensity”
5. Changing the “rate” of the chorus
6. Example using a distorted electric guitar
7. Example using a bass guitar (Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” is a famour example of this)
8. Example using vocals (with limited success)

Bitcrusher Effect in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad) – Quick Jam #38

In this quick tip tutorial video I show you how to use the bitcrusher effect in GarageBand iOS on iPad and iPhone.

The bitcrusher effect allows you to control the bitrate (resolution) of the audio, as well as the sample rate (through downsampling). This creates a lo-fi, distorted, “old school” sound that can be a great addition to some tracks.

Covered in this video:
1. What is the bitcrusher effect
2. Adjusting the resolution (bitrate)
3. Adjusting the downsampling (sample rate)
4. Using a bitcrusher effect on guitar
5. Using a bitcrusher effect on vocals

Keyboard note labels were added in the version 2.3.4 update of GarageBand, so if you are running previous versions, update to the latest version to enable this feature.
